Review: Incoming Death is
the follow-up to Deathhammer, which was a
fucking heavy album. Again, Asphyx delivers a piece of
music in the category heavy-weight, hinting at the Grave
debut, Bolt Throwers War Master, and a
healthy dose of Hellhammer / Celtic Frost. The album
starts off with Candiru, the kind of Asphyx that
appeals to me most: uptempo! I know Asphyx likes its
metal doomy, but I just enjoy the few faster tracks way
more. Every song feels solid in sound and the vocals of
Martin van Drunen still bring back the good old times of
the first Pestilence albums - although I know they are an
acquired taste. However, like on Division Brandenburg,
the albums second song and Wardroid, the
third song, I feel Ive just listened to unfinished
pieces... Luckily they are the only tracks, and the rest
of the album keeps its momentum. This album will have the
bass speakers purr away nicely. Asphyx might not bring
totally new views on death metal, but I think thats
the plus of this band. The moment that happens, it will
probably not sound like Asphyx anymore.
