Review: First impression:
ritual black metal drawn straight from Abruptums
core, but produced in an unconvincing, shrill sound that
makes it miss its mark on every song. Its sad,
because I really enjoy an unhealthy dose of Abruptum
every now and then and the potential is certainly here!
Even though this kind of antimusic is not that hard to
create and is still often frowned upon as a laughable
retarded brother of true black metal or even
simply a waste of time even within black metal
circles throughout all black metal waves its
production is probably more vulnerable than that of any
traditional black metal song. Abruptum described it as
'the audial essence of pure evil', and that takes time
and practice and out-of-the-black-metal-box thinking to
establish. Evil is in the atmosphere, the ritual
character, the twisted thing at the root of the music,
the things you don't hear or pick up subconsciously, and
it should really be felt when listened. Its evil should
not just be suggested by the music, assuming the listener
to complement what they hear with the darkness of
Abruptum thats hinted at in the music. It should be
there clear as day, hitting you in the stomach. One
should not summon Abruptum. One should summon its
darkness!

Opus
diaboli demo CD 2005
TAPE 2012 re-release by Zwaertgevegt
1: Terribilis est locus iste
2: In flagrante delicto
3: Et in arcadia ego
4: Sanguis diabolicum
5: Natalis invictus mors
6: Maleficae a daemonibus docetur
7: De vermiis perditoris
8: Igneo et sanguines rubore fuisse
9: Aquae tenebrae
Review: Another Hell Icon
album comes my way. On this release the band has taken a
good look at Abruptums Profundis de mors vas
cousumet track, which marked the introduction of
well-played keyboard melodies into the charcteristic
improvised ritual noise. Hell Icon is trying, but fails.
The tracks are too empty and start to bore
each time the one-minute mark is passed (for the tolerant
listener). It is not until track 5, Natalis invictus
mors, that Hell Icon comes closer to its Abruptum
prototype. But this might be because the track only lasts
about 57 seconds...

Pestis

TAPE 2012 re-release by Zwaertgevegt

2: Obscurates est sol et aer
3: Pestis laudes praedicare
line-up:

Review: Ever since
Euronymous released Abruptum I have been a fan of that
creatures style, and since there are not that many
bands doing similar stuff, I always come back to the two
masterpieces Obscuritatem advoco amplectère me
and In umbra malitiae ambulabo, in aeternum in
triumpho tenebraum. Hell Icon is one of the bands
that have adopted the characteristic Abruptum style -
echoing drums, improvisational riffing, twisted dark
ambience, and even the latin titles. Fact remains that
this style is extremely particular and unorthodox and
there is a huge risk of sounding like a copy or adding
nothing to everything Abruptum has already done... It is
in this context that Hell Icon operates, and with a
discography as huge as it is, it is hanging by a very
thin tread above the pit of copies... Pestis laudes
praedicare is Abruptum revisited. But only that. It
lacks a bass sound in the final mix, which is essential
to the intended darkness that should ooze out of its
pores, and sadly it just sounds formulaic because of it.
With the right sound-technical ingredients the familiar
formula is easily overlooked by listeners, and that is
the moment the darkness overtakes them as it should. If
not, the formula is the thing that remains, obscuring any
of the intended darkness, offering mainly disappointment.

Maledictum demo CD 2007
TAPE 2012 re-release by Zwaertgevegt
classification: ritual black metal
1: Pater noster
2: Obscenitatis per caterva daemonia
3: Vitam abruptum civitate, fdasti funere vultus
4: Bellum iminet in infernum descendere
5: Voluptas non habet ictum quo animum pellet
6: Pleni sunt cli et terra gloria tua
Review: Since Hell Icon
keeps spewing out release after release in a relatively
short period of time, I am not surprised to hear little
difference and evolution on Maledictum,
comparing it with Opus diaboli, for instance.
That review could easily describe the tracks on Maledictum.
Therefor I refrain from writing more on this release.
Thats the risk you take with repeating
yourself
