Rehearsal Tape
19-06-1992 rehearsal TRACKS 1992
1: Jaws of Satan - Sathanas cover
2: The Return of the Mystic Demon
3: So It Is Done - Acheron cover
4: Dwell in Forever Darkness
5: Myth of Eternal Lies
6: Thou Art Lord - Acheron cover
Review: This one is
downloadable from the Internet - if one searches right -
but it's probably there because of the avid early tape
trading circles, since it's definitely not a proper
release... Occult was of course one of this small
countrys earlier black metal bands, and this
rehearsal is one of the things to remind us how black
metal sounded when the scene had not yet exploded, when
Euronymous was still alive and kicking, when corpsepaint
was not yet accepted in extreme metal scenes (King
Diamond excluded). The obligatory Occult set-pieces of
Sathanas and Acheron are present, to full satisfaction,
as far as a rehearsal can be really satisfying. Other
songs have that trademark early Hellhammer- and
Sodom-influence, that has often been forgotten by the
scene today, but popped up in a lot of bands in 1990-4,
until the Norse sound slowly drowned them out. The
rehearsal sounds more or less like the band did on stage
in those days.

Review: This is a live
recording of one of Occults many shows in the early
1990s, recorded on the legendary Black Flame festival in
Elsloo, August 1992. The sound is not really good, but it
has the simple non-death metal guitar work and trademark
black metal screams with heaps of reverb, that distanced
it from the popular mainstream (death) metal of its days.
How the band was received, I dont know, Ill
have to ask around (I wasnt there; I didnt
know about the festival, to tell you the truth;
hadnt checked the internet good enough I guess :)
). The band certainly expressed its opinion about the
audience: I see a lot of assholes here tonight. A
lot of trendies who must die! Its a real
Zeitgeist recording, that much is for certain, and
somewhat conveys the atmosphere of early black metal
shows in the Netherlands. Sadly the band encored with two
cover songs (of Acheron and Sathanas; present on every
early live show) they had already performed during the
show. My opinion? Dont encore if theres
nothing more to give! Otherwise a trip down memory lane
for the BM-oldies.
